Chapter 20

For the fifth day in a row, Azalea Plantation was a beehive of activity. But unlike the last two days where the activity had been regimented by police procedure, today's beehive activity was under the command of Nora Meadows, and she was stricter and more demanding than any police detective could possibly be.

Lizzie had returned with Kevin the night before and she excitedly went over her plans with Nora regarding the old plantation house. The housekeeper pumped Lizzie for as much information as she could, and by the time Lizzie had come down from her suite the next morning, Nora was ready for action.

"Mops, rags, buckets, cleaning solvent. It's a good start until I see what we are getting into," the woman greeted Lizzie with one of the said buckets and mops in hand. As one of the poor unsuspecting staff walked by, Nora shoved both items in her hands and pointed toward the back kitchen door.

"I've arranged your schedule differently today. We're using as many of the staff as we can to work over at the old plantation house," Nora told the young girl as she stood there looking at her questioningly.

"But isn't the plantation house haunted?" she stammered.

"Poppycock! That's just an old wives’ tale. There are no ghosts over there that I know of, and I've been here a lot longer than you have, Missy. Besides, we’ll be working and making enough noise and stirring enough dust to chase any ghosts that might be in residence far away." Nora dismissed the girl’s question with a wave of her hand and turned her attention to Lizzie.

"Kevin has already been here. He and Josh took the pickup truck to the lumberyard. He said something about stairs needing to be reinforced. Trisha and Emma are on their way, so if you plan on having breakfast, you'd better skedaddle."

Lizzie looked around her in astonishment and then gave a shake of her head. She should know better. Once Nora had a project in mind, she tackled it full force. And why should this be any different?

"Thanks Nora, I'm just going to grab a cup of coffee. And I want to look over those pictures you found last night once more. I'm so glad you knew where they were. Now we can see how the plantation house looked in the past and try to replicate it as closely as possible."

"Replicate all you want, but you are going to have a first-class kitchen."

"It's unnecessary Nora, for the little bit that I cook I could come over here and eat my meals. Besides I don't want to ruin the feeling of the house with modern appliances."

Nora stood with her hands on her hips and clicked her tongue with impatience.

"Of course, you don't want modern appliances, but I know a man who sells fantastic retro appliances that will blend in perfectly. You'll be able to have modern convenience and still maintain the look and feel of the kitchen as it should be. Quit stalling, and get your coffee, there's plenty to be done today," she answered.
